Aviation Safety & Security Staff Engineer
The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 64,000 pilots at 39 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Staff Engineer for our McLean, Virginia, office. The Staff Engineer provides project coordination and subject matter expertise and analysis in support of the activities, programs, and safety initiatives of the Association in the areas of Drones/Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), Urban Air Mobility (UAM), and Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). This includes the standards for aircraft design and operational approval of Drone/RPAS/UAM/AAM, as well as security-related issues associated with Drone/RPAS and future UAM/AAM implementation including detection, surveillance, and datalink communications. They coordinate with and act as liaison between ALPA and appropriate government agencies and the aviation industry, creating and expanding their network of government and industry contacts. The also develop communications to membership, government, and industry groups on a wide variety of Drone/RPAS and UAM/AAM related and other issues, as needed, and in coordination with relevant Association leadership, committee representatives, and staff.
They represent the Association to government agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration and Transport Canada, working with the ALPA Aviation Safety Chair and members of the Air Safety Organization (ASO) safety structure, plus other components of the ASO, as needed, to plan and implement the Association's Drone/RPAS/UAM/AAM policies, initiatives, and goals. The also support ALPA ASO pilot representatives on relevant internal and external committees and assist in conducting meetings between ALPA and industry/government stakeholders on areas of assigned work.
Local, national, and international travel: 20 - 40%.

Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in relevant area, e.g., Unmanned Aircraft Systems, Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautics, or other related discipline, from an accredited college or university; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
Minimum three (3) years of related experience in the aviation industry, five (5) or more years strongly preferred, in airline operations, air traffic control, RPAS/Drones, aviation safety, and/or other related aviation areas.
Part 107 pilot license, a private pilot's license, or higher, is preferred; or, special knowledge and/or expertise in a relevant facet of the aviation industry, as listed above. At management discretion, additional equivalent experience and/or ALPA experience with proven expertise may be substituted for some of the above requirements.
Former employment at airlines and/or the FAA in a relevant capacity may be a plus.
Special expertise in U.S. and Canadian Aviation Regulations (FARs and CARs) and knowledge of ICAO and/or international safety data systems may be a plus.
Understanding of aviation safety concepts; air traffic control; the airline industry, domestic and international; airline pilots; and, the laws that affect aviation safety and the airline industry strongly desired.
Knowledge of FAA/TC regulations and guidance helpful.
Understanding of how safety initiatives and data analysis processes are used for advancing safety is beneficial.
Ability to learn quickly and seamlessly adapt to changing demands is extremely important.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with staff, pilot members, and external contacts.
Technical writing and presentation skills to communicate effectively with Association members and Executives, government and industry representatives and stakeholders, and staff.
Able to work independently and to be proactive in identifying and responding to issues and problems.
On a rotational basis, answers calls to the ALPA Worldwide Accident Hotline and the Pilot Peer Support line, including outside business hours, weekends, and holidays.
Software: Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Occasionally required to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve binders, books, boxes, and files up to ten (10) pounds (lbs.). While on travel, could be responsible to move, raise, reach, and/or retrieve luggage weighing as much as 50 lbs. (Assistance may not always be available.)
